LAWTON – Cameron baseball earns a doubleheader split on Saturday against St. Edward's, as the Black and Gold bats come alive for a 9-1 win in game two of the series, but scores just three in the second game of the day.
The Aggies fell in the series opener against the Hilltoppers on Friday ahead of Saturday's pivotal doubleheader moving them to 2-3 on the young season.
Kyle Williams turned to
Kalen Haynes to start game two of the series after Haynes earned a win and quality start last weekend against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Haynes, a lengthy left-hander shoved for five innings, giving up just three hits, one run, and six walks with as many strikeouts. The southpaw improves to 2-0 on the season, inducing five ground outs for his infield which allowed him to work out of the few jams he found himself in.
The Hilltoppers did not come across to score until the fifth inning when a two-out jake Hahn single to left field plated Turner Olson.
Drew Henderson finished the final two innings of the seven-inning contest and did not allow a baserunner, retiring all seven batters he faced.
The Aggie offense got an early jolt as
Jordan Harrison-Dudley singled to right field to plate
Jayce Clem and
Beau Williams to open the scoring at 2-0. In the third frame, the Black and Gold saw an error by the Hilltoppers backstop to allow
Beau Driver to score before a
Ryan Allen walk-plated Clem.
In the fifth inning,
Nik Sanchez came up with a two-out RBI single to bring home Clem and a
Ryan Allen double allowed Sanchez to come around before a balk saw
Holden Tate score the seventh run for CU.
Tyler Coleman singled to center to drive in Allen and a passed ball saw
Erik Ohman collect the ninth and final run against the Hilltoppers in game one's fifth frame.
Jayce Clem turned in a 3-for-4 effort with three runs scored, the only Aggie with multiple hits in game one of the doubleheader.
In game two on the day, three of the series, the Aggies fell 9-3 as the Hilltoppers scored four runs within the first four innings.
Clayton McClenan got the loss, giving up the first four runs before
Julian Macias gave up four more in his 3.1 innings on the mound and
Carter Bourg finished off the game.
Clem pushed two more RBI's across, with
Tyler Coleman collecting the other to go along with his two hits. The other six hits by CU were spread throughout the lineup.
The Aggies, now 2-3, go for the series split with the Hilltoppers Sunday afternoon at McCord Field with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
