LAWTON – The Aggie baseball team earned their second series split to start the 2022 season with a 9-5 win over St. Edward's on Sunday afternoon powered by their big bats in the lineup.
The now 4-4 CU baseball team opened the home series with the Hilltoppers with a loss in Friday's game one and then answered with a 9-1 win in game two on Saturday. After falling in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Aggies bounced back in the finale thanks to key hits by the power trio of
Jordan Harrison-Dudley,
Jayce Clem, and
Ryan Allen.
St. Edward's got on the board as a walk and hit batter with
Weston Max on the mound came in to score on a single by Cullen Ainsworth.
Cameron answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own on a pair of hits. Allen led off the frame with a single, which was followed by a hit by
Julian Macias. Allen then scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Erik Ohman. Two batters later,
Beau Williams drove in Macias on a groundout to his SEU counterpart.
The next inning, the Aggies scored seven runs on four hits and an error to take a 9-2 lead. Allen kicked things off with a RBI single to center, bringing home
Nik Sanchez, who doubled to leadoff the frame. Three batters later, Williams walked with the bases loaded, bring home
Holden Tate. Clem followed that with a single to left and then Harrison-Dudley unloaded the bases with a homer that landed on 38th street, putting CU up 9-2.
In the top of the seventh, St. Edward's got a fortunate hit with two outs and then after a walk another RBI hit from Ainsworth that resulted in two more runs. They added another in the top of the ninth on a passed ball, but that was the end of their rally.
Max gave up just two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two batters in his 4.1 inning start.
Tyler Cornett pitched well in relief, allowing just two hard-hit balls and striking out six for his first win of the year.
Tyler Gregg came in and finished things off in the ninth.
Clem and Allen each had two hits in the win while Allen and Macias each scored a pair of runs. Williams drove in two of CU's nine runs and Harrison-Dudley had the four RBI on his hit in the sixth.
Cameron will hit the road for their next Lone Star Conference series, visiting West Texas A&M, Feb. 18-20. Game one on Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Canyon, Texas.
