CU comeback in game two spoiled by WT walk-off to sweep doubleheader

CANYON, Texas – The Aggies were one strike away from getting a win over No. 5 West Texas A&M on Saturday, but the Buffs walked it off to sweep the doubleheader clinch the series win.

After winning game one of the four-game set, the Buffs opened the day with a 10-1 win before the Aggies came back to tie game two and force extra innings. The home team eventually came away with the 5-4 win to earn the series win before the finale on Sunday.

There was not much going for the Aggies in game one of the doubleheader. After Kalen Haynes gave up a single run in the first, Julian Macias answered with a solo homer in the third, his first of the year.

The Buffs answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, three in the fourth and then four more in the sixth to win the seven-inning game 10-1.

Cameron had just four hits in the loss with Tyler Coleman hitting a double, Macias having the home, and Jayce Clem and freshman Colby Flood each adding base hits.

Haynes, who has been solid for the Black and Gold this season, gave up six runs on six hits and three walks. He also struck out six in four innings during his first loss of the season. Devin Paz gave up four runs on seven hits in relief and Ben Williams recorded the final two outs in the sixth.

Clayton McClenan got the start in game two and did a good job of limiting the red-hot Buffaloes. He struck out three batters and gave up just one earned run on three hits and a walk in his 4.2 innings of work.

WT got on the board in the bottom of the first, as all-everything catcher Kennedy Badget hit a two-out solo home run. The added another run in the fifth on another two-out hit to make it 2-0.

Cameron's first run came on a solo homer by Beau Williams in the sixth, but WT answered with a RBI double by Adam Becker in the bottom of the frame.

Down to their last three outs, the Aggies got a leadoff homer in the seventh by Ryan Allen, who homered during Friday's game. Macias and Zac DeLong each had one-out singles and then Macias came in to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Coleman to tie the game at three.

To start extra innings, Nik Sanchez drove in Jordan Harrison-Dudley, who tripled earlier in the inning on a RBI single to make it 4-3. WT answered in their half of the eighth, getting a two-out ground-rule double from Will Fuenning and then a single to right by John Butler, with Fuenning just getting in ahead of Sanchez's tag to grab the walk-off win.

Cameron had nine hits in the game two loss, led by Macias and DeLong with two hits each. Drew Henderson and Tyler Cornett combined to finish off the game on the mound, combining for a pair of strikeouts and four hits given up.

Now 4-7 on the season, the Aggies will look to earn at least one win in Canyon on Sunday when the two teams play the fourth and final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wilder Park.
