Haynes, bullpen hold TAMUK to just two hits in 3-1 win

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The pitching trio of Kalen Haynes, Devin Paz, and Tyler Cornett combined to give up just two hits in a 3-1 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Aggies' first victory of the spring.

After giving up 12 total runs in a doubleheader sweep by the Javelinas on opening day, CU head coach Kyle Williams got a gritty start from the 6-foot-7 lefty Haynes and then three no-hit innings by his bullpen to give the Aggies win No. 1 for the 2022 spring.

Haynes faced the minimum through three innings and stranded a runner on third in the fourth, half an inning after Jordan Harrison-Dudley put the Aggies on the board with a monster home run that allowed Julian Macias to score, giving CU a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Tyler Coleman singled with one out and then came in to score on a two-out single by Beau Williams, putting the Black and Gold up 3-0.

Haynes was rolling, sitting down the Hogs in order in the fifth, until a leadoff hit that was misplayed in the outfield allowed Hayden Fails to reach third. In the next at-bat, TAMUK got their first run of the game as Fails scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center. Like he did all game, Haynes locked in and got the final two outs to keep the CU lead at two.

Paz pitched the seventh, getting a pair of fly outs and a ground out in a one-two-three inning. Cornett worked around a leadoff walk and stranded a runner on third in the eighth and then recorded a pair of strikeouts and a ground out in the ninth to secure the 3-1 win.

Harrison-Dudley continued his strong start to the season, going 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI on the long ball. Williams and Coleman both had two hits in the win while the CU lineup worked around 16 strikeouts and seven runners left on base to earn the victory.

Haynes struck out five and walked two in his six innings of work, while Cornett added two more K's and a walk in his two innings on the mound.

Cameron will look to earn a split of the four-game series on Sunday as the two teams meet again at Nolan Ryan Field with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
