CU splits series with TAMUK with 8-1 win in finale

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Cameron baseball team earned a series split against Texas A&M-Kingsville with an 8-1 win on Monday powered by Jordan Harrison-Dudley and the pitching of Weston Max and Drew Henderson

After a tough two losses in Saturday's doubleheader against the Javelinas, the Aggies bounced back with two great games from the CU pitching staff which included Kalen Haynes, Devin Paz, and Tyler Cornett on Sunday and Max and Henderson in Monday's win to split the four-game series 2-2.

Max, who got the start for Kyle Williams in the series finale, didn't have to wait for run support by the CU bats. Cameron put up four runs on three hits in the opening frame. Three came on a Harrison-Dudley blast, his second in as many days, scoring Julian Macias and Beau Williams. Haynes, who served as the designated hitter on Monday, drove in the fourth run in the form of Nik Sanchez on a double to left.

In the second, Cameron added three more runs on a pair of hits and two errors. All three runs came in to score on a "little league homer" by Julian Macias who singled to the TAMUK first baseman. The ball was then thrown away twice, allowing Williams, Tyler Coleman, and Macias to all cross home.

A leadoff walk and a double by Giancarlo Servin in the bottom of the fourth broke the Hogs into both the hit and the run column. Max settled in and got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam thanks to a lineout double play keeping the score at 7-1.

Henderson came in to pitch in the fifth and worked himself out of a bases loaded jam. The junior got four outs in the sixth (strikeout and a passed ball allowed one runner to reach), worked around another leadoff walk in the seventh, and then recorded the final six outs in order to secure the win.

Cameron added one more run in the top of the eighth when Coleman led off the frame with a single and then later scored on a groundout double play, putting the final score at 8-1.

Coleman reached base all four times he came up, recording two hits and scoring a pair of runs. Harrison-Dudley also had two hits and drove in the three runs on his first-inning long ball.

Max gave up just the one run on one hit with a walk and two K's in his four innings of work. Henderson allowed two hits and one walk and struck out five Javelina batters.

The now 2-2 Aggies will make their 2022 home debut next weekend when they host St. Edward's for a four-game series. Game one at McCord Field is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.
