CU men open spring at Houston Classic

LAWTON – After a strong fall, the Aggie men's golf team looks to carry the momentum into the spring as they compete at the Houston Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Golf Club of Houston.

In the first year under head coach Austin Phillips, Cameron's fall season saw them record three top-5 finishes including a second-place finish at the Ryan Palmer Invite and a fourth-place finish at their home tournament, The Hrnciar, to close out the fall.

This year's Houston Classic, a par-72, 6945-yard course, features some of the top teams in the region including No. 4 Arkansas Tech, No. 5 Oklahoma Christian, and No. 18 Midwestern State. The Aggies are currently ranked No. 37 by Golfstat.

Philips has a strong group vying for the tournament title this week led by senior Tyler Kaman. Kaman will be joined in the lineup by freshmen Hamish Murray and Trevor Mierl and veterans Preston Holmes and Joey Kirk. Alexey Karasev and Hunter Drotts are both competing as individuals at this week's tournament.

Cameron's spring schedule features six tournaments before the Lone Star Conference Championship April 18-20 in Glen Rose, Texas. They have two more events in February with the Rattler Invitational, Feb. 21-22, and the Spring Bulldog Clash in Pawley's Island, S.C., Feb. 28-Mar. 1.

The Aggies are scheduled to compete at the Oak Tree Invitational hosted by OC, March 14-15, and then the Lion Invitational in Trophy Club, Texas, March 21-22. The team's final tournament before conference is the DBU Men's Classic, April 4-5.

Rounds one and two will be played on Monday with the third and final round coming on Tuesday. Live scoring for the Houston Classic, can be found on cameronaggies.com. Results and breakdown of the two rounds can be found there as well as soon as possible on Monday and Tuesday.
