LAWTON – After a strong fall, the Aggie men's golf team looks to carry the momentum into the spring as they compete at the Houston Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Golf Club of Houston.
In the first year under head coach
Austin Phillips, Cameron's fall season saw them record three top-5 finishes including a second-place finish at the Ryan Palmer Invite and a fourth-place finish at their home tournament, The Hrnciar, to close out the fall.
This year's Houston Classic, a par-72, 6945-yard course, features some of the top teams in the region including No. 4 Arkansas Tech, No. 5 Oklahoma Christian, and No. 18 Midwestern State. The Aggies are currently ranked No. 37 by Golfstat.
Philips has a strong group vying for the tournament title this week led by senior
Tyler Kaman. Kaman will be joined in the lineup by freshmen
Hamish Murray and
Trevor Mierl and veterans
Preston Holmes and
Joey Kirk.
Alexey Karasev and
Hunter Drotts are both competing as individuals at this week's tournament.
Cameron's spring schedule features six tournaments before the Lone Star Conference Championship April 18-20 in Glen Rose, Texas. They have two more events in February with the Rattler Invitational, Feb. 21-22, and the Spring Bulldog Clash in Pawley's Island, S.C., Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
The Aggies are scheduled to compete at the Oak Tree Invitational hosted by OC, March 14-15, and then the Lion Invitational in Trophy Club, Texas, March 21-22. The team's final tournament before conference is the DBU Men's Classic, April 4-5.
