CU falls in series opener at UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – Cameron lost their series opener at UT Permian Basin on Saturday 16-6 in seven innings thanks to a pair of big, crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth innings by the home team.

The Aggies made the trip to Odessa this weekend looking to move above .500 this season if they could pull off a sweep of the Falcons. The UTPB bats had other plans as they opened the four-game series with a 16-run, 14-hit performance to take game one.

Cameron fell behind in the second as the home team struck for three runs on a trio of hits off Aggie starter Marcos Feria. They added to that lead in the fourth with a 7-run frame, getting seven hits which included three straight doubles off of reliever Carter Bourg

In the top of the fifth, the Aggies tried to mount a comeback, cutting the lead in half with a 5-run effort. Erik Ohman started the rally by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Jayce Clem added the second run on a sacrifice fly that scored Beau Williams. Jordan Harrison-Dudley followed that up with a two-out triple that brought home a pair of runs and then scored on a Nik Sanchez single.

UTPB answered by putting up six runs on four hits and a pair of errors in the bottom of the frame, making it 16-5. CU was able to get one of those back in the top of the seventh as Ohman walked and then after a double by Clem, scored on a Harrison-Dudley groundout. The Falcons were able to record the next two outs via strikeouts to secure the win in just seven innings.

Beau Williams had two of CU's six hits and scored once, while Clem, Sanchez, Julian Macias, and Harrison-Dudley adding the other four with the latter driving in three runs in the loss.

Cameron used five pitchers in game one against the Falcons. Feria earned the loss, giving up six of the runs on five hits and two walks, while Michael Womack was the most effective arm, pitching 1.2 hitless innings with a trio of strikeouts.

The Aggies are now 6-10 on the season and 6-9 in conference play. They will look to even up and take the series lead on Sunday as the two teams play a pair of 7-inning contests starting at 2 p.m. Those two games will be played at Momentum Bank Ballpark in Midland, Texas.
