Baseball splits doubleheader with UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – After losing game one 5-2, the Aggies secured their first win of the series against UT Permian Basin thanks to a 9-run, 13-hit outburst at the plate.

Cameron baseball opened their series against the Falcons on Saturday, falling 16-6 in the opener in Odessa. The two teams then made the short trip to Midland on Sunday to play at Momentum Bank Ballpark where they battled to a split of the 7-inning doubleheader.

In game one, Kalen Haynes, who has been solid all season for CU, did his best to try and tie the series. The lefty had some trouble with his command and a couple of Aggie errors resulted in a pair of runs against him.

A leadoff walk and an error both scored on a single in the second for UTPB and then a wild pitch and another error resulted in two more runs in the third against Haynes, who went three innings, gave up two hits, two earned runs, and four walks while striking out three batters.

Cameron got one of those runs back in the fourth as Nik Sanchez brought home Julian Macias on a groundout. Sanchez then drove in a second run in the sixth with Macias scoring again on an infield single.

Unfortunately, that was all the offense CU could produce in game one. Tyler Cornett pitched the final three innings, giving up one run on a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. He also struck out three batters and walked four.

Cameron's five hits were spread across the bats of Sanchez, Macias, Tyler Coleman, Beau Williams, and Holden Tate

The Aggie bats got going early in game two. Macias drove in Coleman on a single in the first and then Jayce Clem brought home two runs in the form of Williams and Tate on a double in the third.

After a 2-RBI double by former Aggie Oswaldo Godina in the bottom of the third, Erik Ohman provided a 2-run double of his own in the fifth, bringing home Jordan Harrison-Dudley and Macias.

Down 5-2 UTPB answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Cameron came back wiuth a 4-run frame in the top of the seventh to put them up 9-3. Harrison-Dudley began the outburst with a RBI single that scored Clem and then Kalen Haynes drove in two on a single through the right side. Ryan Allen then crossed the plate on a wild pitch, giving the Aggies the 6-run advantage.

UTPB made the Aggies sweat a little in the seventh as they scored a run on a sacrifice fly and then put two on with two outs, but Kyle Williams put Clem on the mound and CU's everyday third baseman struck out the final batter to secure the win.

Clem also led the efforts at the plate, going 3-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Haynes also had two hits and two runs driven in while Harrison-Dudley and Macias collected 2-hit performances as well.

Drew Henderson put together a solid start for CU, going five innings and giving up just two runs on two hits. He worked around four walks and struck out six Falcon batters. Tyler Gregg bridged the gap between Henderson and Clem, giving up two runs without giving up a hit; he walked six batters and hit one.

The Aggies, now 7-11 on the year and 7-10 in league play, will look to split the series with UTPB on Monday as the teams return to Odessa for game four of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
