TROPHY CLUB, Texas – After one and a little over half a round of golf in the books, The Aggie men are in third place after beginning play at the Lion Invitational on Monday.
On the Whitworth Course of the Trophy Club, Cameron and the rest of the field got through a full round and then 12-14 holes of the second round before play was halted due to severe weather. Cameron finished the first round tied for fifth but have since moved up to third with a 2-over second round score so far.
Led by Freshman
Trevor Mierl, the Black and Gold were in a tie for fifth place with a 297 after 18 holes of play to start Monday. The freshman shot 70 with four birdies and an eagle while being in a tie for third place individually.
Joey Kirk added a 74 with three under-par holes while
Tyler Kaman shot 75,
Hamish Murray had a 78, and
Preston Holmes rounded out the group with a 79.
Kaman and Murray are both currently even through 11 and 13 holes of the second 18, while Holmes and Mierl are both 1-over and Kirk is 3-over par. Mierl sits in a tie for fifth place individually at one-under for the event with Kaman also in the top-20 with a 3-over score.
The Aggies have made 93 pars so far with 19 birdies and a pair of eagles. Mierl has a team-high seven birdies with a field leading 2-under score on the par-3 holes. Fellow first-year player Murray has a team-best 22 pars through Monday's action.
Arkansas Tech holds the lead with a 292 first round score while sitting at 8-under for the second round. Southwestern Oklahoma State is a stroke ahead of the Aggies while Midwestern State and Western New Mexico are currently both two back of CU.
The Mustang's Jake Doggett shot a 68 during his opening round, one stroke better than WNMU's Adam Samnegard. Doggett is also sitting at 4-under for the second round through 14 holes.
Cameron and the rest of the field will start the final holes of the second round at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and then will head straight into the third and final round to complete the Lion Invitational.
