Coleman and Clem go deep in tough loss at UAFS

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Cameron's 13 runs and 15 hits were not enough to win game one of their series at UAFS on Friday as the hometown Lions rallied with a 6-run ninth inning to win 14-13.

The Aggies entered Friday trying to bounce back from their second Lone Star Conference series sweep of the year as they visit UAFS for a 4-game set this weekend. Game one was a back and forth slugfest that saw the Lions come out on top with a big ninth inning rally.

Tyler Coleman got Cameron on the board in the top of the first as the outfielder plated Jordan Harrison-Dudley, Julian Macias, and himself on a 3-run homer to left with two outs away in the frame.

After the home team answered with three runs on three bases loaded free passes, Cameron got another 2-out rally with Ryan Allen driving in Coleman and Nik Sanchez on a double and then Colby Flood singled in Allen to make it 6-3. UAFS answered with a 5-run bottom of the sixth to take an 8-6 lead.

Cameron came right back and put up a 5-run inning of their own in the top of the seventh. Jayce Clem got the rally started with a solo homer and then Coleman got an infield single, bringing home Macias. Sanchez then walked with the bases loaded and the Flood drove in another on a single to center. The fifth run of the frame came across to score on a Beau Williams single.

The Aggies tacked on two more in the eighth as both Holden Tate and Coleman scored on a fielding error by the UAFS second baseman. The Lions then scored six runs in the ninth with the tying run scoring on a fielding error by the pitcher and the winning coming in on a wild pitch.

Coleman was responsible for three of CU's 15 hits while driving in four runs and scoring four times. Macias, Harrison-Dudley, Zac DeLong, and Flood all had 2-hit games for Cameron with Flood driving in two runs as well.

Tyler Cornett gave up just three earned runs and struck out six during his 5-inning start. The Cameron staff combined to give up nine hits and stranded nine runners on base in the loss.

Cameron, now 8-16 on the year and 8-15 in league play, will look to get back on track on Saturday when the two teams meet again at Crowder Field, this time for a 7-inning doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
