FORT SMITH, Ark. – After suffering their second walkoff loss of the series in game one on Saturday, the Aggie offense, led by
Beau Williams, exploded for 12 runs in game two as they split their doubleheader with UAFS.
Cameron had to recover from a tough loss to open the series against the Lions as they home team scored six runs in the ninth to win 14-13. UAFS used another walkoff to earn the win in game two of the series before the Aggies bounced back with a big win in game three.
The Lions got on the board early in game one, scoring two in the second on a balk by CU starter
Kalen Haynes and a groundout.
Julian Macias scored on a UAFS error in the fourth to cut the lead in half but a wild pitch by
Weston Max in the fifth allowed the Lions to go back up by two, 3-1.
Down to their last out, the Aggies got the benefit of a dropped fly by the UAFS centerfielder that allowed
Erik Ohman and
Holden Tate to score to tie the game.
The bottom of the seventh started with a walk and then a error by Max on a sacrifice bunt looked to allow the runner from first to score to end the game, but the umpires ruled the ball went out of play and the runner had to go back to third.
After an intentional walk,
Kyle Williams deployed the 5-infielder shift. UAFS went for a sac bunt suicide squeeze in the next at bat that saw the batter strike out and the runner tagged out.
Evan Nichols was unable to get a strike across in the next two at bats, as the winning run came in to score on the second walk.
Cameron totaled just four hits in the game one loss with Macias,
Jordan Harrison-Dudley,
Zac DeLong, and
Ryan Allen all collecting base knocks. The pitching trio of Haynes, Max, and Nichols gave up just three hits and struck out seven Lion batters but issued 11 free passes.
In game two, the Aggie offense exploded for 12 runs on 14 hits to cruise to a 12- win, snapping their losing skid.
It all started with a 2-run third that saw both
Beau Williams and
Jayce Clem double in runs. Cameron added three runs in the third with RBI's by Harrison-Dudley,
Tyler Coleman, and DeLong in the frame.
The Aggies' big inning came in the sixth when they scored five runs with two coming in on another Harrison-Dudley RBI single. CU capped the scoring with a 2-run seventh with Williams adding another RBI on a single and Macias getting one on a sacrifice fly.
Drew Henderson pitched five solid innings for CU with his big mistake coming on a solo homer in the third. He finished with four strikeouts while giving up four hits in his third win of the year.
Carter Bourg pitched the sixth and had two strikeouts and two walks.
Ben Williams gave up two runs on two walks and a hit to start the seventh and then
Devin Paz came in to get the final three outs.
Beau Williams was 4-5 with four runs scored, two RBI, and two doubles to lead the lineup. Harrison-Dudley drove in three runs, had two hits, and scored twice while Coleman also had a pair of hits a day after collecting three in the series opener.
Now 9-17 overall and 9-16 in league play, Cameron will try and earn their fourth 4-game series split of the season on Sunday as the two teams meet for the finale starting at 1 p.m. They are 3-0 when looking to close out the series with a split in the final game of the weekend.
