LAWTON – The Aggie baseball team bounced back with a big win over No. 23 Lubbock Christian on Thursday night thanks to a strong outing on the mound by
Tyler Cornett and early runs.
With an 8-3 victory over the Chaps, Cameron snapped a 7-game losing streak and kicked off the Easter weekend series at McCord Field on a high noted. The CU pitching staff combined for 14 K's led by Cornett while big hits from
Beau Williams and
Ryan Carter led the offense.
Cameron got off to a strong start at the plate as Williams clubbed a 2-run homer in the bottom of the first two take an early 2-0 lead on the second baseman's fifth homer this spring.
The lone blemish on Cornett's line came in the top of the third as two hits and two free passes resulted in a trio of runs for the Chaps. The CU starter settled in and struck out two straight batters to end the threat with two runners on base.
Down 3-2, the Aggies quickly responded with Williams and
Jordan Harrison-Dudley both reaching on two out walks and then Williams scoring on a single by Carter and Harrison-Dudley coming in to score on a throwing error in the same play to put the home team up 4-3.
Carter come up with a 2-RBI single in the fifth and then Harrison-Dudley scored on a double play in the 3-run frame and then
Colby Flood scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to give the Aggies their eighth run of the series opener.
Cornett finished with 11 strikeouts while giving up two earned runs, three total, on two walks and five hits to earn his third win of the year.
Kalen Haynes pitched two 1-hit innings with a pair of K's and
Evan Nichols closed the door in the ninth with a punch-out. The trio's 14 strikeouts are the most by Cameron this season and the most against the power-hitting LCU lineup this spring.
The top four in the Cameron lineup were responsible for most of the offense on Thursday night.
Julian Macias, Williams, and Carter all had two hits with Williams scoring three times and driving in a pair and Carter driving in three. Harrison-Dudley walked three times and scored with Macias scoring twice as well.
Cameron moves to 12-25 overall this season and 12-23 in league play, jumping Texas A&M International in the Lone Star Conference standings. They will look to improve on that on Friday as the two teams play a pair of 7-inning games beginning at 2 p.m. at McCord Field.
