LAWTON – In front of a packed McCord Field for "Future Aggies Night", Cameron and Texas A&M International opened their 4-game series by totaling 26 runs with the Dustdevils coming out on top, 18-8.
Kyle Williams and the CU baseball team hosted about 100 little leagues and their families from around the Lawton Community to start their last Lone Star Conference series of the 2022 season. Unfortunately, the home crowd did not get to see a CU win, as TAMIU played spoiler to take the series lead.
It started in the opening frame as CU starter
Tyler Cornett gave up six runs in the opening frame, four coming on a grand slam by the Dustdevils 8-hole hitter.
The Aggies were able to respond in the bottom of the first thanks to a 2-run blast from
Beau Williams, his eighth of the year, and a solo shot from
Tyler Coleman.
Cornett settled in and pitched three straight scoreless innings before the road team added two more runs in the top of the fifth. They then got another grand slam from Daniel Quiroz in the top of the seventh to give them a 12-3 advantage.
Cameron had their big offensive inning in the bottom of the seventh as senior
Nik Sanchez hit a 2-run homer to get the rally started and then fellow senior
Jordan Harrison-Dudley hit a 2-run triple off the center field wall before scoring on a
Ryan Carter infield single to score CU's fifth run of the frame and cut the deficit to 12-8.
International got one of those runs back in the eighth on a sacrifice fly and then used a 5-run top of the ninth to give them plenty of insurance runs to come away with the 18-8 win.
Cameron totaled 10 hits in the loss, with two hits apiece from Sanchez, Coleman, and Carter. Sanchez also drove in a pair of runs, as did Williams and Harrison-Dudley.
Cornett gave up the eight runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four batters during his six innings of work.
Devin Paz,
Evan Nichols, and
Matthew Scott finished out the game on the mound for CU.
The Aggies fall to 13-32 overall and 13-30 in LSC games with the loss. They will get two more chances against the Dustdevils on Saturday as the two teams play a 7-inning doubleheader with game one scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch. CU baseball will host Senior Day in between the two games.
