LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron men's golf team looks to carry the momentum into the spring as they get things going at the Houston Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Golf Club of Houston.
The second-year Head Coach Austin Phillips' squad had four top-five finishes in the fall, including a second-place finish at their home tournament, the Hrnciar.
The Houston Classic is a par 72, 6945-yard course that features some of the top teams in the region, including sixth-ranked Henderson State, No. 10 Oklahoma Christian, and No. 16 Missouri-St. Louis. The Aggies are currently ranked 43 by Golfstat. Joining them in the top 50 are Midwestern State (36), Washburn (37), Harding (39), and Central Oklahoma (46). This year's field also has two division one programs as Houston and Rice will compete.
Phillips has a strong group contending for the tournament title this week, led by Trevor Mierl and Hamish Murray. Mierl starts the season ranked 36th individually, as Murray comes in at 44th. Rounding out the lineup for Cameron are Preston Holmes, Zachary Siaca, and Hunter Drotts.
Cameron's spring schedule features five tournaments before the Lone Star Conference Championship on April 17-19 in Thackerville, Okla. They have one more event in February with the Rattler Invitational, Feb. 20-21.
The Black-and-Gold are scheduled to compete at the Oak Tree Invitational hosted by OC, March 13-14, and then the King-Alfred Invitational in Tyler, Texas, March 20-21. The team's final tournament before the conference is the NCAA West Regional Spring Preview, April 10-11.
Rounds one and two will be played on Monday, with the final round coming on Tuesday. Live scoring for the Houston Classic can be found on cameronaggies.com. Results and breakdown of the two rounds can be found there as soon as possible on Monday and Tuesday.
