AUSTIN, Texas – Cameron dropped the first game of the doubleheader with St. Edward's 18-7 before falling 8-2 in the nightcap at Lucian-Hamilton Field Saturday afternoon.
Trent Mallonee was 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, a home run, and a walk, while Lance Barnett and Kai Hershberger collected two hits and a run. Hershberger also had an RBI. Will Bradley, Colby Flood, and Hunter Smith had a hit, with Bradley, Flood, and Spencer Simpson scoring a run. Barnett hit a triple, and Bradley and Hershberger collected a double.
Clayton McClenan received the start for the Aggies, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing nine runs, seven earned on six hits with two strikeouts. Jacob Acheson threw 0.2 innings, giving up four runs, three earned on four hits. Grayden Stauffer went 3.2 innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and a strikeout.
Barnett started the scoring with a single through the left side to score Mallonee, and Simpson scored on a sacrifice fly from Smith to give CU a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
SEU took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Black-and-Gold would tie the game at 3-3 after a Mallonee single up the middle to plate Bradley.
The Hilltoppers broke open the score with six runs in the second to take a 9-3 lead.
Barnett smacked a triple, then came in to score on a single from Hershberger to make it 9-4.
SEU responded with four more runs in the bottom of the third.
Cameron scored two runs in the fourth, off a Mallonee two-run home run to make it 13-6.
In the fifth, Hershberger scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 13-7.
The Hilltoppers scored five runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 18-7.
In game two, CU was held to four hits, one from Barnett, Kody Bigford, Mallonee, and Smith. Barnett and Bigford recorded an RBI, while Barnett hit a triple and Smith had a double.
Marcos Feria got the start, pitching five innings, giving up eight runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Matthew Scott threw an inning with no runs or hits.
Barnett got the Black-and-Gold on the board with an RBI triple in the first, driving in Williams.
SEU responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead.
Bigford singled in Smith in the second to make it 4-2 before the Hilltoppers scored two more runs in their half of the inning to take a 6-2 lead.
St. Edward's added another run in the fourth and fifth to take an 8-2 lead.
These two teams will play the series' final game tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
