LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron baseball team would drop game one before rebounding to salvage a split of the doubleheader on Saturday at McCord Field against Arkansas Fort Smith. Two Aggies pitchers collected double-digit strikeouts.
CU fell 10-2 in the opening game, with the first and sixth innings doing the Black-and-Gold in. The Lions scored four runs in the top of the first, five runs in the sixth, and one in the seventh, while Cameron scored in the second and sixth.
Marcos Feria started without recording an out. He faced seven batters, surrendering four runs on a hit, walking two, and hitting two. Garrett Klein pitched 5.1 innings allowing five runs, four earned on six hits, with 10 strikeouts. Grayden Stauffer threw the final 1.2 innings giving up a run on three hits with a strikeout.
The Aggies scattered five hits, one each from Zac DeLong, Drew Durst, Kai Hershberger, Riley Hines, and Trent Mallonee. Jayce Clem and Durst had an RBI, while Durst and Mallonee scored a run.
UAFS scored four runs in the top of the first.
In the second, Hershberger lined a single back up the middle to plate Durst to make it 4-1.
Fort Smith took advantage of an error by CU to rally for five runs in the sixth.
Mallonee scored off the bat of Clem to cut it to 9-2.
The Lions would add their final run in the seventh, closing out game one 10-2.
Clayton McClenan pitched a complete game in the nightcap, striking out 12 Lions', while allowing two runs, one earned on eight hits.
Mallonee went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and two doubles, Randy Aberouette was 2-of-4 with a run, an RBI, and a double, Durst went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, and Hunter Smith was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Clem went 1-of-3 with a double and a walk, Spencer Simpson was 1-for-3 with a run and a walk, and Beau Williams had a 1-for-4 outing with two RBI, a run, and a double.
UAFS got ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.
Williams would use small ball to plate Mallonee in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second, Mallonee doubled to right, driving in Aberouette and Simpson, followed by an RBI single by Smith that drove in Mallonee, giving Cameron a 4-1 lead.
Arkansas Fort Smith plated a run to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth.
The Black-and-Gold plated the final three runs in the sixth, while Williams doubled to left-center to drive in Mallonee, Smith scored off a single from Durst, and Williams crossed the plate on a single from Aberouette.
Cameron plays for the series win tomorrow with the first pitch at 1:00 pm.
