LAWTON, Okla. – Freshman Jenna Risoli’s third career double-double and junior Sarah Corbett’s team-high eight kills helped pace the Cameron volleyball team’s offensive, but it wasn’t enough Saturday afternoon against the Lone Star Conference’s front-runner, Abilene Christian, who defeated the Aggies in straight sets (17-25, 9-25, 30-32).
Freshman Jenna Keeler and junior Filly Ezenwa helped control the defense, as they combined for seven assisted blocks. Sophomore Joanie Dubberly, meanwhile, had 13 of Cameron’s 53 digs, while senior Valerie Ogle added a team-best 17 assists.
During the first set, Cameron (7-14, 2-6) found itself down early, but fought back to bring the contest within one. However, ACU (19-3, 8-0) went on a 7-4 run to go up seven (20-13) late in the stanza, and Cameron couldn’t recover.
Anything that could go wrong did go wrong for Cameron in the second set, as the Aggies could only smack six kills. The Aggies were also haunted by seven attacking errors, while ACU had 14 kills and hit .700 for the frame.
The final set featured 13 ties and five lead changes, as Cameron nearly forced a fourth set six times. The Aggies found themselves up one (30-29) after junior Adrienne Lawson had one of her four kills in the frame, but ACU finished the match by scoring three straight points.
Up next for Cameron will be a trip to Texas Woman’s Thursday, Oct. 21, and Texas A&M-Commerce Sunday, Oct. 24.
