Lawton, Okla. (Oct. 8, 2011) ¬¬— Cameron lost a tough home match Saturday against Abilene Christian, 3-1 (20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 18-25). Cameron (10-8, 4-6) played competitive in the first and second games, but the momentum swing in favor of the Wildcats (11-10, 5-4) as each game came to a close.
“I don’t think we competed well in the first two games,” said Head Coach Doug Tabbert. “They competed harder than we did, and we didn’t do much to slow them down. Even when there were times to take momentum, we would make errors … it undercut our ability to get back into those sets.”
The third game was all Cameron, as the Aggies applied offensive pressure, defended well and capitalized on ACU mistakes to take the 25-19 victory.
“We got some touches at the net and dug more balls,” Tabbert said. “We were more productive offensively and were able to get some kills.”
Abilene started fast in the fourth game, pulling ahead 10-5, and never looked back. Cameron fought hard but was not able to pull it any closer than 18-15, as the Wildcats used a strong offensive attack to seal their victory.
“One thing really clear: we didn’t stop anybody,” the coach said. “Both their middles did a ton of damage, and their freshman right side … she crushed us. We didn’t stop them at all, not in those three cases.”
Freshman Kelle Carver led the Aggies offensively with 19 kills and a .250 hit percentage. Senior Sarah Corbett was a force defensively, chipping in on five blocks and eight kills on 13 attempts.
Cameron (10-8, 4-6) will travel to Denton, Texas to take on Texas Woman’s University (7-12, 5-5) and a chance to climb up in conference standings.
“They’re playing better now than they were earlier,” Tabbert said. “I expect that will be the case, and we’ve got to rise to the challenge.”
