LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 15, 2011) — Cameron’s women’s basketball team kicked off its season in dominant fashion Tuesday night, defeating Barclay College 83-26 in the Aggie Gym. While there were a number of good things to be pleased about, Head Coach Tom Webb said it’s just nice to play a meaningful game.

“It always feels nice to get the first game under your belt,” he said. “Everyone got the opportunity to get on the floor and run up and down a little bit.”

The Aggies (1-0, 0-0) took control early and used a stifling defense to keep the Lady Bears from finding any offensive rhythm. Cameron took a 38-10 lead into the locker room, with senior C.C. Rundles, senior Julie Paunovic and junior Ali Brown combining for 28 of the 38 points.

The Black and Gold came out in the second half and continued its dominance, going on a 16-0 run to extend its lead to 52. Barclay failed to find an answer, falling to Cameron in the end by 57 points, 83-26.

Going into the game, Webb said he had two things in mind: taking care of the ball and hammering the glass. While he admitted there are still areas to improve, the team performed well in each, scoring 28 second chance points and finishing +16 in rebounds; while also limiting the Lady Bears to only 5 points off turnovers.

Rundles finished with a game-high 19 points, followed by Paunovic with 16 points. Senior Sabelle Diata, coming off an all-conference season, poured in 14 and added five blocks. Stats are nice, but in order to compete, Webb said you have to improve daily.

“Biggest thing is getting in the gym and working,” Webb said. “Once you get the feet wet, it starts. We just want to move forward and get better.”

The team will return to action at 6 p.m. Saturday in Pueblo, Colorado against the Colorado State University-Pueblo.
