Cameron Defeats Hillsdale In Aggie Gym

Box Score

LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 22, 2011) ― Cameron put on a show for its home crowd Tuesday night, defeating Hillsdale Freewill Baptist 77-45 in the Aggie Gym.

The Aggies (2-1, 0-0) came out firing in the first half, going on a 17-0 run for a seven minute stretch early in the first half to mount a solid 23-3 lead. Cameron’s defense continued to apply pressure, cruising into half time with a 41-19. As a team, Cameron forced 14 turnovers in the first half and 27 for the game.

“Defensively, I thought we got after it quite a bit,” said Head Coach Tom Webb.”We started the first half really aggressively. And, I am pleased with forcing 27 turnovers. They (the team) came out and played really hard and really aggressive. It was just a great team effort.”

The second half saw more of the same, as Cameron continued to pace the action. The team pulled out to its largest lead, 34, on an Alexis Williams, junior, jump shot at the 13:54 mark of the second half. The Black and Gold would go on to win the game by 32, 77-45. Senior Julie Paunovic led the team with 16 points, followed by seniors Nicole Pendarvis and Sabelle Diata with 11 and 10 respectively.

“We took good shots and looked very unselfish offensively,” Webb said, adding extra emphasis on playing as a team. “Team basketball is a good way to pull a win. We made good passes and cut hard … Our bench got to play a lot and get good experience. Late in the year, we’re going to need everyone.”

While the win was nice, Webb said the team still needs to focus on improving, citing 3-point shooting and free throws as an emphasis, but said his team is talented enough to recognize that and overcome.

“The nice thing is, this team can be really good from the inside and still shoot from the perimeter,” he said. ”This team knows how to compete and going into conference every game is important. We will do a great job of competing.”

Cameron will return to action after the break, beginning conference play on Dec. 3 with a 2 p.m. game in the Aggie Gym against Texas A&M-Commerce (0-3, 0-0).
