PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 20 Cameron men’s tennis team split their matches on Sunday in the final day of the West Florida tournament.
The men competed first in the morning and fell to No. 16 Ouachita Baptist (OBU) in a close 5-4 decision.
In doubles, Santiago Romero and Patrick Eichler were not able to overcome the No. 16 pair of Till Heilshorn and Tobias Kuhlmann at No. 1. The Aggies also faced a loss at the No. 3 spot. However, Duje Janjic and Thomas Peixoto snatched an 8-5 win from Helge Knuth and Teodor Anghel at the No. 2 slot.
Janjic continued his excellent play in singles, picking up a win over Anghel at No. 5 with a pair of breadsticks.
Manuel Barroetavena made quick work of his opponent at the No. 4 position. He clutched a 6-1, 6-0 decision over OBU’s Ramon Abaitua.
CU’s Nicolas Clerc was also successful. The reigning Lone Star Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week sent Ernesto Laborda packing after taking hold of the 6-2, 7-5 victory.
The men dropped the matches at the No.1, No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Two of those losses came at the hands of nationally ranked players.
The Aggies were more successful later in the day, grasping a 6-3 win over the University of Alabama-Huntsville (UAH).
The men got things started by taking two of the three doubles matches.
Janjic and Peixoto secured the win at the No. 2 position in a tight 9-8(3) match, while Jeff Sasser and Barroetavena won 8-4 at the No. 3 slot.
In singles, sophomore Jorge Gerosi captured an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory over UAH’s Jordan Belcher in the No. 6 spot. Barroetavena also had a routine win, defeating Raphael Olivera at the No. 3 slot 6-1, 6-1.
Janjic and Clerc won as well. Janjic took out Guillermo Reyes 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, and the 6-foot-2 Argentine dispatched Bruno Medeiros at the No. 5 position 6-3, 6-3.
Peixoto pushed his opponent Daniel Canellas to three sets at No. 1 spot, but was unable to come up with the win. The Aggies also lost at the No. 2 position.
The men’s next match will be against Washburn on March 22 at the CU Tennis Complex. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
