LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron
University Women's and Men’s Head Tennis Coach
James Helvey got his
600th career win on Saturday after both Aggie teams picked up wins over
the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers.
Â
The No. 18 women’s team was the first to secure victory, making their win Helvey’s 600th.
Â
After going up 2-1 in doubles, the women went on to grab four singles victories.
Â
Julia Puckhaber routed Carolina Fahnehjelm 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot,
in what was a routine win, while No. 27 Amanda Moberg took out Paige
Rachel 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 position.
Â
Sophomore Elvira Sholles clenched the deciding match for the Aggies by
outplaying Mary Bain and taking hold of a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 4
slot.
Â
Florencia Tornero was a winner as well. The CU freshman dispatched Anne Ruscoe 6-1, 7-6 at No. 6.
Â
The women’s 6-3 decision over the Hilltoppers allowed them to improve
their record to 10-3. The match also helped the women's squad maintain
their lead in the South Central region where they currently rank No. 2
while St. Edward's is No. 6.
Â
The men also grabbed a 6-3 win over No. 14 St. Edward’s and bettered
their record to 14-3. Regionally, it was a battle of No. 3 versus No. 4
as the Aggies came into the match as the lower regionally ranked team.
Â
The Black and Gold kicked things off by taking all three doubles matches.
Â
Thomas Pexioto and
Patrick Eichler earned the first win of the day by
dismissing Ryan Wiggins and Pedro Bronstrup 8-2 at the No. 2 position.
Â
At the No. 1 and No. 3 slots, the Aggie men picked up 8-6 and 8-4 victories, respectively.
Â
The No. 20 men were pushed in singles play, but CU proved victorious.
Â
Things started slow for the Aggies, as they dropped matches at the No. 1
and No. 2 positions, but their momentum increased as play continued.
Â
Duje Janjic fought back from a set down to win his match at No. 3
against Ryan Wiggins 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Manuel Barroetavena also needed
three sets to take out his opponent at the No. 4 spot, but the Argentine
eventually prevailed, winning 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
Â
Nicolas Clerc produced the men’s last win of the day. The CU standout
continued his undefeated season by overpowering Alexandre Bueno 6-0, 6-3
at the No. 6 position.
Â
The men take to the courts again April 1 when they will do battle
against St. Mary’s at the CU Tennis Complex. The women, however, will
face Tarleton on March 29 in Stephenville, Texas.
