Aggies Split Matches Against Mustangs

by Amanda Cantu, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

The Cameron tennis teams split their matches against Midwestern State on Friday at CU’s home courts.  The men fell to the Mustangs 6-3, while the women came away with a close 5-4 decision over the conference rival.

The men started slow, losing two of the three doubles matches.

Santiago Romero and Nicolas Clerc secured the lone doubles victory for the Aggies. The pair routed Luke Joyce and Vjekoslav Stipanic 8-1 at the No. 1 position.

CU dropped the matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in tight 9-7 and 9-8(4) decisions, and went on to grab only two singles wins.

Manuel Barroetavena took out Bo Zaputovic 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 slot, bettering his season record to 18-1.

Nicolas Clerc produced the final win of the day for the Black and Gold. Clerc came back from a break down at 5-2 in the second set to beat Jarrod Liston 6-1, 7-5. The Argentine is undefeated so far this spring.

Though the team’s lose to the regionally ranked Mustangs was their first conference defeat of the season, the men still hold an 18-4 overall record.

Like the men, the nationally ranked No. 18 women started off 2-1 down after doubles play.

The standout pair of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber punished Alex Odell-Michels and Rozike Janzen van Rensburg at the No. spot, recording an 8-2 win.

The duo also saw success in singles play.

No. 23 Amanda Moberg dispatched van Rensburg 6-3, 6-1 at the top spot, while Puckhaber overcame Odell-Michels 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.

Elvira Sholles picked up an easy win for the Aggies. The sophomore bested Abbie Lewis 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 slot.

The CU women came up short at No. 4 and No. 5, which tied the contest 4-4 and left the deciding match on the racquet of Florencia Tornero.

Ashley Huse stole the first set from Tornero in a close tiebreaker at No. 6, but the Aggie freshman outplayed her opponent in the next two sets and won the match 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, clenching the contest for the CU women.

After topping the Mustangs, the women’s squad now boasts a 16-5 record.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will be in action again tomorrow when they face conference foe Abilene Christian in Abilene.
