CU Drops Hard Fought Match Against West Texas

LAWTON, Okla. (Sept. 6, 2011) — Cameron’s volleyball team dropped a tough four-game match against national ranked (21) West Texas A&M, 3-1, Tuesday in the Aggie Gym, bringing their record to 1-2 in the young season.

While a loss is never easy to swallow, head coach Doug Tabbert said there were positives to pull from a tough match against the defending conference champions.

“I liked how we played,” he said. “We played hard and really battled. We gave a really good effort.”

The Aggies started out strong on their home court, pulling ahead of the Lady Buffs early in the first game before eventually securing a 25-21 win. West Texas got hot in game two, en route to a 25-13 victory.

That would be the last easy game for the Lady Buffs, as the Aggies fought and hacked their way into competition in the final two games.

“I really like how we came back after the second game and competed,” Tabbert said. “It’s nice to know we are able to put good stuff together early in the season.”

Despite playing well, Cameron dropped the final two games, 25-19 and 25-21, respectively. Tabbert said that while you play to win the game, a home opener against a national ranked team and defending conference champion is a struggle for a number of programs.

“They (West Texas) are a tough draw for a conference opener,” the coach said. “It was nice to know that we could compete with them. We made them work hard for whatever they got. That says a lot about our team.”

Cameron returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Aggie Gym as they take on Texas Woman’s University (0-4).
