LAWTON – The Cameron University tennis teams were in outstanding form today at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex when they faced off against the Cowley College Tigers. Both Aggie teams came away with convincing victories.
The women got off to a slow start, dropping two of the three doubles matches. Partners Sara Londono and Florencia Tornero stood their ground on the big points and managed to grab an 8-5 decision over Cowley’s Kristin Richardson and Arianna Raga at the No. 2 slot. At the No. 1 position, the tandem of Julia Puckhaber and Amanda Moberg fought back from two breaks down to even the match at 7-7, but were unable to maintain their momentum. The pair fell 9-7 to the team of Diana Davitaia and Zsofia Biro, who are ranked second in the nation in the National Junior College rankings. Antonia Moberg and Elvira Sholles put up a stiff fight at the No. 3 spot, but could not overcome their counterparts of Lexi Maytubby and Mariah Vargas, and lost 8-4.
The CU squad picked up its game in singles play. Amanda Moberg was the first to claim victory. The Swede barely broke a sweat when she sent Zsofia Biro packing with a breadstick and a bagel at the No. 2 slot. Sholles clenched the next win for the Aggies when she dispatched Maytubby 6-4, 6-0. Londono had an easy win as well. The Colombian overwhelmed Raga 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Tornero and Antonia Moberg earned identical 6-1, 7-5 wins over their opponents at the No. 5 and 6 spots.
Puckhaber was unable to secure victory at the No.1 position, and fell in three competitive sets. Nevertheless, the Black and Gold were able to dispatch the Tigers 6-3.
On the men’s side, the doubles competition was a clean sweep for CU.
Thomas Peixoto and
Duje Janjic took out Zack Evenden and Jack Busby 8-6 at the No. 1 slot, while the No. 2 pair of Nicolai Ferrigno and
Mateus Campos and the No. 3 duo of
Jorge Gerosi and Gonzalo Garzon made quick work of their matches, picking up 8-4 and 8-2 wins, respectively.
Peixoto upped the level of his game in singles. His determined play allowed him to grasp a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 position over Cowley’s Evenden, ranked No. 6 in the National Junior College Rankings. Ferrigno also came away with a three set win. After surrendering the first set, 6-3 the CU freshman went on to defeat Edgardo Tapia by taking the next two 6-1 and 6-4 in a dynamic and hard-fought match at No. 3.
Janjic and Garzon played solid tennis, but were knocked out 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 respectively. However, senior Campos and junior Gerosi had routine matches at their No. 5 and No. 6 spots, allowing the Black and Gold to take hold of the 7-2 win.
The next action for the CU women will be March 2-3 in Edmond, Okla. During the two days of play, the women will contest against the University of Central Oklahoma, Southwest Baptist and East Central.
The Aggie men will also take to the courts March 2-3. However, the squad will play at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex. The first match of the two day series will be against Colorado State-Pueblo at 9 a.m.
