Aggie Netters Silence Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO – The Cameron University women’s and men’s tennis teams faced off against St. Mary’s University today and each squad easily bettered the Rattlers in 8-1 and 7-2 decisions.

The No. 14 women picked up two of the doubles contests. The tandem of Amanda Moberg and Sara Londono failed to drop a game, punishing counterparts Valentine Lambrechts and Kelly Cooper 8-0 at the top position. Antonia Moberg and Julia Puckhaber came away with a victory as well. The pair defeated Angelique De Oliveira and Huong Huynh by a score of 8-5.

The only loss of the day for the CU women came at the No. 2 doubles slot, as Elvira Sholles and Florencia Tornero fell in a tense 8-6 decision.

The Black and Gold continued their momentum into singles competition. Amanda Moberg and Antonia Moberg recorded identical 6-1, 6-2 wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions, while Puckhaber and Londono both clinched matching 6-1, 6-0 results at No. 3 and No. 4.

Sholles and Tornero also documented routine wins, resulting in the Aggies securing the 8-1 win and improving their overall record to an impressive 14-2.

The No. 18 CU men’s squad also earned victory over the Rattlers. The Black and Gold swept doubles play. The pair of Nicolai Ferrigno and Mateus Campos and the duo of Thomas Peixoto and Gonzalo Garzon each overwhelmed their counterparts 8-4 at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. Meanwhile, Duje Janjic and Dean Weigelt bested their opponents 8-3.

Janjic, who has displayed exceptional play as of late, outperformed his opponent 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Garzon and Angelo Lencioni both sent their counterparts packing with a bagel and a breadstick at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots.

Jorge Gerosi and Ferrigno saw the only losses on the day for the Aggies. Both men went down in tight matches, recording scores of 5-7, 6-3, 10-3 and 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 respectively. CU senior Peixoto won his contest by default, permitting the men to top the Rattlers 7-2. The team is now 11-6 overall.

The women and men will return to the courts at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21 to take on regional rival St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas.
