CU Tennis Teams Blow by Bearcats

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Cameron University tennis teams each picked up wins over regional rival Northwest Missouri this afternoon. The match was the first in a series of matches the teams will compete in throughout the rest of the week.

The No. 14 women’s team garnered a 7-1 victory over the Bearcats. The squad’s sole loss came at the No. 1 doubles spot. The CU tandems at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions earned 8-5 and 8-6 wins, respectively.

In singles play, No. 25 Julia Puckhaber made quick work of Camila Quesada, taking out the Bearcats’ No. 1 in a 6-3, 6-1 decision. Amanda Moberg clinched an identical win at the No. 2 slot, while sophomore Florencia Tornero commanded a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 position. Elvira Sholles and Antonia Moberg each overwhelmed their opponents in two quick sets, collecting 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 wins, respectively.

The match at the No. 3 spot was not played, allowing the Aggies to come away with the 7-1 decision and improve their overall record to 8-1.

The No. 18 Black and Gold men were able to secure a win over the Bearcats as well, but had a tougher time of doing so. The men got off to a slow start, dropping two of the three doubles matches. The team of Thomas Peixoto and Duje Janjic fell in a tight 9-8 match at the No. 1 doubles slot. Nicolai Ferrigno and Mateus Campos also had a close match; the pair lost by a single break of serve at the No. 2 position. However, the twosome of Gonzalo Garzon and Jorge Gerosi had an easy time at the No. 3 spot, defeating counterparts Calvin Patterson and Luis Altimires 8-2.

Peixoto and Ferrigno clutched routine wins in their singles matches. The Brazilian netted a 6-1, 6-2 decision, while the Dane knocked out his opponent 6-2, 6-3.

Janjic and Gerosi each pulled out tough three set victories. Both surrendered their first sets, but came back to win the next two, allowing them to come away with 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4 and 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision, respectively.

Campos and Garzon were unable to produce wins for the Aggies at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Garzon put up a fight, but unable to overcome Rafael Bugiga and fell 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Campos was defeated after giving up a just one break of serve; the final decision was 7-5, 7-6 in favor of the Bearcats.

The CU men reaped the 5-4 victory and are now 8-2 overall.

The next action for both Aggie teams comes tomorrow when the squads face off against the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Drury University in Maryville, Mo. The first match is set for 9 a.m.
