MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Cameron University tennis teams competed against Drury University today and saw mixed results. The women were able to pull out a 5-3 win, but the men suffered a tough 6-3 loss.
The No. 14 CU women gave up two of the three doubles matches, with the only win coming from the pair of Elvira Sholles and Antonia Moberg at the No. 3 slot. The twosome defeated its opponents of Ellen Bennett and Abbey Sharpe in a crushing 8-1 decision.
The Black and Gold mounted a comeback in singles play, picking up four wins. Julia Puckhaber showed excellent form in her contest at the No. 2 spot. The junior picked up an easy 6-3, 6-0 victory. Sara Londono and Sholles were also successful at their positions in the line-up. Londono collected a nice 6-4, 6-1 decision, while Sholles knocked out her counterpart at the No. 4 slot 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, sophomore Antonia Moberg sent the Panthers’ Bennett packing with a bagel and a breadstick at the No. 6 position.
CU’s Florencia Tornero was up a set and 4-3 over Sharpe, but the match was suspended before play could be completed. Nevertheless, the Aggies gained the 5-3 win and now boast a 9-1 record overall.
Like the women, the men came away with only one doubles victory. The tandem of Nicolai Ferrigno and Mateus Campos did well to reap the 9-7 decision at the No. 2 spot. The duo of Thomas Peixoto and Duje Janjic showed promise of grossing a win at the top slot as the two were once up 6-3, but could not hold their ground and fell in a tight 9-8 result.
Things did not improve in singles, as the Aggies only managed to squeak out two wins.
Janjic grabbed the first set of his contest at the No. 2 spot, went on to drop the second, but then came back to take the third set and the match over Roman Gonda with a final score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Men’s tennis coach James Helvey said he was pleased with the play he saw from the Croat today.
“Duje played really well today as well as yesterday. I’m impressed with what I have seen,” he said.
Jorge Gerosi also pulled out a three set win. The Argentine dispatched Jandui Reyes 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 6.
The remainder of the men all yielded tough losses. Peixoto fell in three tight sets, while Nicolai Ferrigno, Gonzalo Garzon and Mateus Campos were all beaten in equally close two set matches.
The No. 18 Aggie men are now 8-3 overall.
