LAWTON – The Cameron University men’s and women’s tennis teams both easily dispatched Dallas Baptist this afternoon at the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Complex. The No. 20 women collected a 7-2 victory, while the No. 22 men made a perfect sweep of the Patriots.
The women got off to an excellent start by taking all three doubles contests from the No. 32 Patriots. The Aggie pairs at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots each came away with 8-5 wins, and the twosome of Julia Puckhaber and Elvira Sholles decisively defeated their counterparts at the No. 2 position 8-3.
The momentum continued into singles play. Sholles was the first to claim victory after she soundly silenced Katie Daugherty 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4. Sara Londono was next to pick up a win. Her 6-3, 6-2 dismissal of Hannah Innes allowed the Black and Gold to go up 5-0, thus securing the victory.
The last two wins of the day came off the racquets of Puckhaber and Florencia Tornero. The No. 28 CU junior battled to seal the 7-6, 6-3 decision over Leah Rutt at the No. 2 slot. Meanwhile, the Argentine subdued DBU’s Leah Smith 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
The only Aggie losses came at the No. 1 and 6 spots. Amanda Moberg fell 6-1, 7-5 to Natalie Gennison, while Antonia Moberg went down in an intense 3-6, 6-4, 13-11 struggle against Arianne Goddard.
Today’s impressive performance by the women permitted them to improve their record to a remarkable 20-3.
The CU men wrapped up their 9-0 victory in less than three hours of play.
Doubles competition was a piece of cake for the squad, with each pairing recording comfortable wins. The tandems at the No. 1 and 2 spots both earned 8-3 wins, while the duo of Duje Janjic and Dean Weigelt topped Ramses Rios and Nathan Wilson 8-1 at No. 3.
The wins kept coming in singles action. Thomas Peixoto and Janjic both knocked out their opponents 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 and 2 positions. At the No. 4 slot, sophomore Gonzalo Garzon sent Joe Yeado packing with a pair of breadsticks. Aggie veterans Mateus Campos and Jorge Gerosi both displayed solid performances in their identical double bagel decisions at the No. 5 and 6 positions. Freshman Nicolai Ferrigno had arguably the toughest contest of the day, yet he still eased past Phillip Allen 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
The men now hold a 15-7 record on the season.
Both CU teams will return to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow when they compete against conference rival Midwestern State at on the Mustangs’ home courts.
