Aggie Men Fall to Abilene Christian in LSC Semifinal

SOUTHLAKE, Texas – The No. 22 Cameron University men’s tennis team closed out its season today when it fell 5-2 to No. 16 Abilene Christian in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.

The men started off on the wrong foot by dropping two of the doubles contests. The duo of Mateus Campos and Nicolai Ferrigno was unable to surpass the No. 6 pair of Hans Hach and Nick Plum, losing 8-5 at the No. 1 slot. Thomas Peixoto and Gonzalo Garzon were also unable to secure victory as they were taken out in a tight 8-6 decision.

Duje Janjic and Dean Weigelt, who have seen much success as a doubles tandem, collected the squad’s only doubles win by easing past Michael Morris and Guilherme Gesser 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.

The Aggies could not find a way to turn the tide in singles action. Ferrigno, who was recently crowned LSC Freshman of the Year, claimed CU’s only singles victory. The Dane’s match against Alfredo Desiati went the distance, but Ferrigno’s tough and steady play earned him the 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win.

Jorge Gerosi was also pushed to three sets; however, his ended in favor of the Wildcats. Gerosi fell in a close 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision at the No. 4 position to ACU’s Borja Cortes.

The matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots were taken by ACU as well. Nationally ranked No. 38 Peixoto gave up the first set of his match against No. 6 Hach, but showed promise of extending the match to three sets when he came back to work his way into a tie break for the second. However, Hach would squeak out the tie break and come out on top clutching the 6-3, 7-6 result. Meanwhile, Janjic fought hard in his contest against Plum, yet fell 6-4, 6-4.

The remaining matches were left unfinished as the Wildcats had already secured victory.

Despite the loss, the Aggie men have had a notable year, earning their 19th consecutive winning season by documenting a 16-9 record.
