Aggies edge Rangers in five sets

Box Score
LAWTON, Okla. -- The Cameron University Aggie volleyball team made things interesting but defeated the Northwest Oklahoma State Rangers in five set thriller at the Aggie Gym Tuesday night.

The first set was back and forth the whole time, with Cameron pulling ahead late with three straight points to take the set 26-24. Neither team hit above .200 in set one.

NWOSU used a .231 attack percentage to even the match up with a win in set two, 25-19.

The Aggies bounced back and handled set three with a 25-19 win of their own, which was started by and early 8-1 run and a couple of rallies late.
Cameron could not put the Rangers away in set four, letting NW Oklahoma State get out to their own early lead, 7-1. Although the Aggies put together a couple of big rallies to cut the gap, the Rangers put the set away with a kill, 25-21.

In the fifth and final set, Cameron got out to an 8-3 lead, but NWOSU would cut the gap with a 6-2 run. The Aggies brought it together with some key blocks and finished the set on a 5-1 run, capped off by a kill by Kelle Carver to take the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

"Early on we didn't block very well, and let them do some things offensively," said head coach Doug Tabbert. "We solved that and got some blocks later, but we still weren't that efficient on offense… we couldn't get that big kill until the fifth set."

On the offensive end, the Aggies were led by Carver who had 17 kills and four blocks. Maci Terrell stepped up and had nine kills, while Grace Newkirk and Kat Evans added eight kills of their own. They were assisted by Kayla Hebert, who had her 12th double double of the season with 42 assists and 23 digs, while adding six kills of her own.

The Aggie defense paid major contributions to the win, totaling 112 digs with Erin Hardy leading the way. Hardy broke her career high of digs in a season with 35 in the match. Additionally, the Aggies got double digit dig matches from Evans, who had 11, and Jenna Risoli, who had 18. The Aggies also got a career high performance from Annelise Carpenter, who broke her career mark in blocks with nine in the match.

"Erin made a lot of plays for us, and some key ones down the stretch. It was a match that exposed some deficiencies for both teams…each team made plays that helped out the other teams we ultimately just made more plays down the stretch than they did," Tabbert added.

Northwestern Oklahoma was led by Korina Lillard and Paola Turibio who both had 13 kills apiece. Lillard also had a double-double with 23 digs; Tiana Barnett had 48 assists, while Megan Hentschke added 40 digs to the effort.

"We like to think that we have an opportunity to go 4-0 down the stretch," said Tabbert. "We need to play better than we did tonight, but we have the chance to end the season on a decent winning streak if we can find a little extra that can put us over the hump."

The Aggies, who are now 7-20 on the season, will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Midwestern State.
