LAWTON, Okla. – The #19 Cameron University men’s tennis team got a big win Thursday morning as the beat the #24 ranked Midwestern State Mustangs, 6-3.
The Aggies won two out of three of the doubles matches with the number one pairing of Duje Janjic and Angelo Lencioni falling 8-6 to the Mustangs ninth ranked pairing of Luke Joyce and Colby Meeks. However, the #18 pairing in the nation, Nicolai Ferrigno and Dean Weigelt won 8-5 in the two spot and the pairing of Dennis Merdan and Joao Fazendeiro got a very close 9-8 win to put Cameron up 2-1.
In the singles matches, #20 ranked Ferrigno stayed undefeated on the season getting a 6-4, 7-6(4) win of the forty fourth ranked player Joyce. Both Janjic (6-4, 6-2) and Merdan (7-6, 6-1) won their matches in the two and three spots for Cameron. MSU got two back in the fourth and fifth spots, with both Jorge Gerosi (6-7, 6-2, 10-8) and Lencioni (3-6, 7-5, 6-3) falling in three sets. Cameron would pick up their sixth point in the sixth singles match, as Fazendeiro got a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win.
This puts the Aggies at 15-2 overall and gets them their first Lone Star Conference win of the season. MSU falls to 11-5 with the loss and 1-2 in conference matches.
Cameron will play again April 3 as they head to Abilene, Texas to take on the #16 ranked Wildcats.
