LAWTON, Okla. – The #18 Cameron University men’s tennis team continued their strong play following their first Lone Star Conference regular season title since 2009 beating St. Edward’s 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
In their final regular season home match, the Aggies got their 18th win of the season and have won sixteen of their last seventeen matches. The Aggies only season blemishes have come at Division I, UT-Arlington and #13 Grand Canyon.
The Aggies got strong performances from their doubles pairings, sweeping SEU for the early 3-0 lead to head into the break.
However, in singles St. Edward’s James Rodgers would knock off Nicolai Ferrigno in the one slot, 6-4, 2-6, 6-7. After starting the season with 17 straight wins, Ferrigno has dropped two of his last three matches.
Dennis Merdan played in the number two slot for the second time got a swift 6-2, 6-3 win over Pedro Bronstrup. Merdan, the reigning Lone Star Conference player of the week, has won his last five matches in singles.
The Hilltoppers would get wins in the three and four slots but the Aggies would get wins from Joao Fazendeiro and Dean Weigelt to give CU the 6-3 victory.
Cameron will have a day off before returning to action on April 15 at Oklahoma Baptist University.
