NORMAN, Okla. – The match might have been close, but the Cameron University men’s tennis team got their twentieth win of the season, 5-4, over Seminole State College to end their regular season.
Cameron (20-2) is riding an eight match winning streak and they have won 18 of their last 19 matches since Feb. 8.
Seminole State wasn’t a pushover match for the Aggies; the Trojans in the most recent NJCAA/ITA rankings they were fifth nationally.
The Aggies would take a 2-1 lead out of doubles. In the one slot the pairing of Nicolai Ferrigno and Jorge Gerosi would be the one loss for CU, 8-5. For Ferrigno it was only his fourth doubles loss of the season and first with Gerosi as a partner.
In singles, Cameron would get wins in the top of their lineup from Ferrigno and Dennis Merdan. Fergino got his twentieth singles victory (6-2, 6-1) of the season in the one slot, while Merdan won his seventh in a row (6-4, 6-3) to finish the regular season with an 18-4 record.
The Trojans would respond with wins in the three, four, and six slot before Joao Fazendeiro shut down the comeback with a 6-1, 7-5 win in the five slot.
Cameron, the number one seed for the Lone Star Conference Tennis Championship in Southlake, Texas will find out their opponent tomorrow. Their match time has been set at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19.
