SOUTHLAKE, Texas – Luck wasn't on the Cameron University men's tennis team's side as the Aggies fell to Midwestern State in a heated battle, 5-4 in the Lone Star Conference Championship Semifinal on Friday.
With a three way tie for the runner up spot in the LSC standings, the Aggies drew the Mustangs based on the latest NCAA Regional rankings. Unfortunately for Cameron, all of the top four teams in the region were conference opponents, with CU as the one seed, Abilene at the two spot, Incarnate Word in third, and MSU rounding out the group in fourth.
Cameron would get one game out of doubles from Midwestern. The pairing of Nicolai Ferrigno and Dean Weigelt would be CU's win in the two slot beating their Mustang counterparts, 8-2. Duje Janjic and Angelo Lencioni would fall in the one slot, 8-4. Dennis Merdan and Joao Fazendeiro lost in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-3) in what would really lead to be the deciding match going forward.
In singles, Cameron got wins out of the top half of their lineup. Ferrigno earned his 21st win of the season, 7-6, 6-0 in the one slot, Janjic would have the same result in the two slot, while Merdan came from behind to get the win out of the three slot, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Gerosi and Fazendeiro both lost their matches in the four and five slot, 6-1, 6-3. Weigelt would take the first set 7-5, however he would drop the next two, 6-4, and 6-2 to give MSU the 5-4 win.
Cameron's record falls to 21-3 overall and will wait for NCAA Selection Show on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. to see if they are one of the programs selected for the national tournament. The show will be aired live on NCAA.com for no charge.
