Scouting Christian Brothers
Cameron has faced Christian Brothers only once before in 2010. The Aggies would fall to the Lady Buccaneers 1-3 on a neutral court in Memphis, Tenn.
Jenna Risoli is the lone Aggie player on the 2013 squad to face Christian Brothers.
Last season the Lady Buccaneers went 21-13 overall with an 11-5 conference record. At home, Christian Brothers dominated their foes going 11-1. However, on the road they went 10-12. The Lady Buccaneers would finish runner up in the GSC Tournament, falling to number-17 ranked West Florida. A week later, Christian Brothers would get the last laugh defeating West Florida in opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
In their preseason coaches poll, the Lady Buccaneers were picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference. They also had a pair of preseason All-GSC selections with outside hitters Alexis Gillis and Hannah Kurtz getting honored by the conference coaches.
Based off of last year's team, Christian Brothers had a .197 attack percentage and averaged 12.5 kills per set. Defensively, they average 15.6 digs per set and 1.6 blocks per set.
Scouting Central Oklahoma
This is the first matchup between Cameron and Central Oklahoma since the Broncos departed the Lone Star Conference after the 2010 season. Despite the two year gap, the two programs have a long history with one another. No other team has faced Cameron in volleyball more than UCO. This will be their 65th match in program history, with the Broncos leading the series 26-38 over the Aggies.
The Broncos wrapped up their first season in the MIAA with a 13-18 overall record and 7-10 conference record. In the MIAA Preseason poll, the Broncos were selected to finish in eight place.
With five returning players from the 2012 team, Central Oklahoma's main returning threat is Barbara Jackson. Jackson finished the 2012 season second in kills with 240, and averaged 2.24 kills per set. On the defensive side, the Broncos have Tate Hardaker who recorded 581 digs, which was fifth on UCO's All-Time season list. As a team, UCO averaged 11.3 kills per set, 15.3 digs per set, and 2.3 blocks per set.
Scouting Alabama Huntsville
The Lady Chargers were selected to place sixth in the GSC despite pulling off tournament upsets in the past two seasons. Last season, they would finish with an 12-21 overall record and a 5-11 GSC record. At home, the Lady Chargers were 8-5 but they were 4-16 on the road or on a neutral court.
Alabama Huntsville is led by Stacey Sargent who was named All-GSC Second Team last season. Sargent led the Lady Chargers with 397 digs and 47 service aces. As a team, they had a .196 attack percentage, with 12.9 digs per set, and 1.6 blocks per set.
Cameron has faced Alabama Huntsville twice in program history with their last meeting coming in the 2009 season. The Aggies are a perfect 2-0 against the Lady Chargers.
Scouting Southwest Baptist
Southwest Baptist finished with a 10-23 overall record and a 2-16 MIAA conference record. At home the Bearcats finished with a 7-12 record, but finished with a 3-11 road record. In the MIAA preseason poll, Southwest Baptist was selected eleventh.
The Bearcats averaged 10.9 kills per set last season on the offensive end. While on the defensive side, they averaged 15.6 digs per set and 2.0 blocks per set. Southwest Baptist's leading threat at the net is Jordan Nedbalek who had 256 kills and had a robust .286 attack percentage, she also carries a 1.06 per set average in blocks as well.
Cameron has not faced Southwest Baptist since the 2009 season and before that it was 1996. In both of these matches Cameron would get the victory, while in their other two meetings in 1988 and 1993 the Bearcats would get the win.
Youth Movement
Cameron enters the 2013 season with 14 sophomores and freshman on its squad. Half of that group saw major playing time last year for the Aggies which should pay dividends this year.
Double Trouble
With the return of
Kelle Carver this season who was a dominate force at the net for the Aggies in 2011 and
Kat Evans who led the team in kills last season, Cameron will be a force to be reckoned with offensively. Carver as a true freshman led CU with 425 kills and tied the Aggie high for kills in a match with 30 in 2011. While Evans, had 435 kills, and a career mark of 24 last season against St. Mary's (TX).
Evans' kill total was second highest in the Lone Star Conference. On the other side of the court, Carver led the conference in weekly kills per set from Oct. 4 to the end of the season and finished the season ranked 33rd in Division II in kills per set with 3.88.
