ODESSA, Texas – Cameron worked their way to a split and a series win over Texas-Permian Basin after taking game one 4-1 in a pitcher's duel, the Aggies later fell in a offensive battle 9-7 in the final game of the series.
With the split the Aggies are 6-5 overall, while UTPB goes to 9-5.
Dirk Masters (2-1) show some mastery on the mound in the opener for his second outing in a row he tossed allowed only two hits in an outing. Against the Falcons he went six innings with eight strikeouts, and the one earned run given up.
Logan Fanning came in for the seventh and recorded the final three outs for his second save of the season.
Cameron opened the game with
Tyler Cook hitting a single to center field to score
Matt Nilmeyer to give CU at 1-0 lead. However, scoring was a premium and four scoreless innings passed before the Aggies struck again in the sixth with
Cody Knight scoring Nilmeyer on a single.
In the bottom half of the inning, UTPB scored their lone run of the game off a wild pitch from Masters. The Aggies responded back in the seventh with two insurance runs from a Nilmeyer double for the 4-1 win.
The Aggies and Falcons combined for 20 hits and 16 runs in game two. Aggies starter
Javarias Banks went four innings, and gave up three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Both relievers,
Zek Kleypas and
Deven Youngstedt, gave up two earned runs apiece.
After UTPB got a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, Cameron struck for three in the top of the third, capped off by and RBI double from
Tyler McKinzie. The Falcons responded with two more in their half of the third to make it a 4-3 ball game.
In the top of the third, CU took back the lead thanks to an RBI double from Nilmeyer and an RBI single from
Tyler Cook. However, UTPB tied the game at 5-5 with a single run in the fourth inning.
Knight, who was 5-7 with two runs and two RBI on the day, hit the first CU homer of the season in the sixth inning to give the Aggies the 6-5 lead. That lead would not last as UTPB scored two runs in both the sixth and eighth to extend their lead to 9-6. The final run for CU came in the top of the ninth, when Cook singled in
Nate Hale.
The Aggies will play next on Tuesday in a non-conference nine inning contest at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.
