Two out hits boost Aggies over #19 Southern Arkansas

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas --  The Aggies picked up timely two-out hits and rallied past #19 Southern Arkansas 7-6 on Friday at the SAU DII Classic at the Ballpark at Grand Prairie.

Cameron (1-0) batters scattered 13 hits in the opener and their pitchers would strike out 14 Southern Arkansas batters in the winning effort.   Of those 13 hits, five were doubles which is the most for the Aggies since a 15-6 win at McCord Field on April 15, 2014 against Southwestern Oklahoma where they would also hit five.  The Aggies 14 strikeouts against the Muleriders (0-1) is the most by a CU pitching staff since Feb. 19, 2002 matching a total they did at home against Mid-America Bible.

Bronson Pulgados and Cody Bower both had two hit, two RBI afternoons, with Brandon Wright and Nate Hale also having a two hit day at the plate.

"We played really hard," said head coach Brady Huston.  "The guys fought and came up with cluch hits for us today, (Bryan) Belote was also stellar for out of the bullen in the win."

Cameron stuck first in the contest with two outs in the opening frame when Pulgados hit a second pitch ground-rule double that bounced over the left field fence to score  Tyler McKinzie in from third base to go up 1-0.   However, SAU came back in the bottom half of the inning with a two RBI double down the left field line to give the Muleriders a 2-1 lead over Cameron through the first.

After two scoreless innings, SAU hit a double to right center with the bases loaded to score a pair to go up 4-1 over the Aggies.   In the top of the fifth, Bower closed the SAU gap back down to two with a homer to left field and in the sixth CU did more damage with two outs with five hits and four runs to take a 6-4 lead.  Jorden Fields and Bower both gave the Ags a RBI double in the inning with Cole Williams hitting a RBI single.

The Aggies lead was short lived through, and in the seventh a third strike wild pitch would put a runner on that led to a game tying homer to left center.

For the third time on the game the Aggies picked up a timely hit in the top of the ninth with two outs.   Pulgados with Wright at second and Colton Adams at first hit a (1-1) single through the right side to bring Wright home for the go-ahead run.

Logan Fanning came out of the bullpen and tossed clean bottom frame for the save and clinch the win.

Dirk Masters started the game and tossed four innings with six strikeouts and four runs given up. Bryan Belote picked up the win going four innings and he struck out seven SAU batters while giving up two runs.

Cameron will return to the diamond on Saturday with a 10 a.m. contest with East Central and concluding the weekend with a 4 p.m. contest against Washburn.
