CU baseball drops two at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron baseball team fell twice in their double header at Angelo State on Friday evening. The Rams defeated the Aggies in a 5-0 shutout to start the double header and took the nightcap 2-1 on a seventh inning go ahead run.

In game one, the Rams scored in their opening frame, plating a runner on an RBI groundout and followed up with a solo homer by Paxton DeLaGarza. DeLaGarza would bring the Rams' advantage to four, blasting a second homerun for 2 RBI in the bottom of the third and another Ram RBI groundout extended their lead to 5-0.

The loss was charged to CU's Dirk Masters (1-3), and ASU's Matt Shannon got the win on the mound, pitching a complete game and held the Aggies to five hits, while striking out seven batters and walking one.

In game two of the double header, the Aggies struck first in the opening inning as Nate Hale hit a leadoff double, and he would score on an RBI groundout for the 1-0 Aggie lead.

Cameron held its advantage until the bottom of the sixth when an Aggie third baseman error allowed an ASU batter to reach first, and he would later score on another Aggie infield error to tie it up at 1-1.

In top of seventh, the Aggies advanced a runner into scoring position with two outs, but a strikeout retired the side. In the bottom frame, Angelo State would advance a runner to third as well with a single to right field but brought him home on a sacrifice bunt for the 2-1 Ram win.

Tyler Abrego (0-1) was charged with the loss. The Aggies recorded six hits to the Rams' four, but left six on base in the loss.

Cameron (17-10) will wrap up the series with Angelo State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
