LAWTON – The No. 17 Cameron women's tennis team continued their chase for win No. 20 and now only need two more after a 9-0 sweep over Texas Permian-Basin on Friday.
Cameron hasn't hit the 20 win total since they went 23-5 during the 2011-12 season where they were regional champions and reached the NCAA National Championships. The Aggies should be able to reach the 20 win milestone with Newman scheduled on Saturday and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Apr. 29 to open the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Wichita Falls.
In doubles play, CU swept with the closest match coming in the three-slot with
Paula Gutierrez and
Mathilde Thibaudat squeaking by with a 9-8 win.
With the 3-0 lead, the Aggies dropped the throttle down with
Alina Gorina sweeping the two-slot to move to 16-3 this season.
Samantha Wood won her ninth in a row with a sweep in the five-slot; the CU junior moved her singles record to 17-2 in dual play. No. 19 Gutierrez is now 14-3 this year with a 6-2, 6-0 win in CU's top-slot.
The loss to the Aggies will send UTPB to 4-14 this season.
Cameron will close out their regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Newman.
