LAWTON – The No. 16 Cameron men's tennis team will debut their spring season with a trio of matches Feb. 2-4 in the Lone Star state.
The 1-0 Aggies will first stop in Plano, Texas where they will matchup with Tyler College at 1 p.m. on Thursday and then Collin College at 1 p.m. on Friday before traveling down to UT Arlington for a 10 a.m. contest on Saturday.
Tyler College presently tops the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis JUCO rankings and have the top two nationally ranked individuals (No. 1 Jorge Martinez, No. 2 Ferran Calvo) who combine for the No. 2 spot on the doubles team rankings.
At No. 12 in the JUCO rankings is Collin College.
To conclude their road trip, the Aggies will face Division I UT Arlington who are the defending Sun Belt conference champions and made an appearance in the first round of the 2016 NCAA tournament.
The Mavs are 0-1 after falling to Rice 4-2 in their season opener on Jan. 22.
Cameron carries over a win from their fall season where they swept Cowley College on Sept. 12 for their lone team contest of the fall before entering individual play.
At the Midwestern Invitational in September, Cameron took 14 individual matches with
Bruno Babic winning his bracket.
In October at the ITA Regional,
Vinicius Santos advanced to the Elite 8 as the number-4 seed in singles and in the double's bracket,
Felipe Oyarzun and
Mateo Velasco reached the semifinals for the second year in a row.
As a team, Cameron is ranked No. 16 nationally and is No. 2 in the region behind Midwestern State.
Regionally, Santos is ranked No. 7 in singles and Babic is No. 10.
The pairing of Oyarzun/Velasco are No. 17 in the nation and No. 3 in regional doubles pairings.
