Cameron swept by ASU in doubleheader

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron University baseball team lost a doubleheader on Saturday to No. 6 Angelo State, falling in game one 10-4 and game two 12-0.

The Aggies are now 18-10 overall and 0-3 in Lone Star Conference play, while ASU is now 21-4 and 3-0 in conference play.

Game one starting off well for CU, as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Anthony Acevedo drove in Bronson Pulgados on a RBI single, while Leno Ramirez doubled in Cody Knight in the next at bat to put CU 2-0. The Rams responded right away, striking for three runs in their half of the first to take a one run lead early.

After a scoreless second inning, Angelo State added four more runs on the board in the third, giving them a five run cushion. Cameron cut that cushion down in the top of the fourth as they scored two more runs, as Haydon Bogard drew a bases loaded walk and then Cole Williams scored on when Micah Kaaukai grounded into a double-play, making it 7-4.

A two run homer in the fifth and a solo shot in the sixth for ASU sealed the game for them, as they took game one 10-4.

Game two was all Rams as they scored one run in the first and second to open up the game. They added three more in the fourth and another in the fifth to go up 6-0. The game got out of hand in the sixth, as ASU exploded for six runs to give them their 12-0 win.

Jake Mathys threw a gem in game two for the Rams, going all seven innings and striking out six Aggies while giving up just four hits.

Acevedo and Ramirez each had three hits and a RBI on the day to lead CU at the plate, while Jacob Boston and Matt Waller led ASU with five RBI each.

The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday, as the play a single, nine inning game starting at 1 p.m.
