CU and ASU close out series with slugfest

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron and Angelo State baseball teams combined for 24 runs and 33 hits on Sunday, as the No. 6 Rams won 13-11 to complete the four game sweep of the Aggies.

CU is now 18-11 overall and 0-4 in Lone Star Conference play, while Angelo State moves to 22-4 and 4-0 in league play.

The Aggies opened up the game with three runs in the first inning and two more in the second to go up 5-0 early. Micah Kaaukai drove in Leno Ramirez to open up the scoring in the first, and then scored as Anthony Acevedo reach on an error for CU's second run. Bronson Pulgados then drove in Cody Bower on a bun single the final run of the inning. In the second, Bower drove a ball up the middle to score both Kaaukai and Ramirez.

Cameron's lead didn't last very long, as ASU exploded for seven runs in their half of the second, with a pair of RBI doubles and a two run homer in the inning. The Black and Gold responded quickly, scoring three more runs in the third inning to take back the lead. Another Ram error allowed Pulgados to score and then RBI singles from Jorden Fields and Kaaukai put the Ags back on top.

However, Angelo State matched CU with three runs in the bottom of the third, with two of those coming on a two run homerun by Tyler Coolbaugh. ASU extended their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth, giving them a 12-8 lead.

Both team scored in the sixth inning. Cameron started it off by scoring two runs in the top of the inning as Acevedo hit a two run homer for his fifth of the season. The Rams added another run in the bottom half, as they still led 13-10.

The Aggies added one more run on a solo homer from Bower, but that would be the last of it as Joe Hauser finished off the ninth for his eighth save of the season, giving ASU the 13-11 win and the series sweep.

Gaige Vines was credited with the loss for CU, after he came in for Oswaldo Godina and pitched 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Tyler Abrego relieved him and finished off the game, giving up just one earned run and striking out five.

At the plate, Kaaukai was 4-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Bower tallied three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Ramirez also had three hits, while Acevedo matched Kaaukai with two RBI.

The Rams were led at the plate by Matt Waller, who was 4-5, while Coolbaugh had a team-high three RBI and three others had two RBI each.

Kenton Schroter got the win, going 3.1 innings while giving up two runs on five hits. He is a perfect 5-0 on the season.

Cameron will return home for their next series, as they host Eastern New Mexico for four games next weekend, March 31-April 2.
