LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron men's tennis team got a big win on Tuesday, as they beat conference and regional foe Midwestern State 6-3 to move to 12-10 overall this season and 1-0 in league play.
The Aggies got their first point in one doubles, as the 13-ranked pairing of
Felipe Oyarzun and
Mateo Velasco won 8-3. After falling in the three doubles match 8-2, CU bounced back with a hard-fought 9-7 by
Bruno Babic and
Keiran President to put the Black and Gold up 2-1 going into singles play.
In singles, M. Velasco started Cameron off strong, winning 6-1, 6-2 in the four match, before Oyarzun gave the team a 4-1 lead with a win in the third spot. MSU got a point back in the four match as
Julen Gutierrez fell 6-3, 6-4, but the Aggies clinched the match as
Vinicius Santos came back in a three set win to beat the ninth ranked player in all of Division II. After a President loss in the six match, Babic gave CU their sixth point with another hard-fought three set victory.
Cameron may have improved their standings with the win as they were behind the Mustangs in both the ITA National and South Central Regional rankings.
The CU men will finish off their season with two road conference Lone Star Conference matches as they visit No. 26 Western New Mexico on April 14 and then UT Permian Basin on April 15.
