Aggies drop first game at LSC Tournament to ASU

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cameron University baseball team fell to top seeded Angelo State 8-5 in the opening day of the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday night.

Cameron got on the board first as Leno Ramirez led off the game with a double and then scored on a RBI double from Cody Bower. ASU responded by scoring a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game.

After a scoreless second, Ramirez and Bower teamed up again in the third, as Ramirez led off the inning with another double and Bower drove him in on an infield single. However the Rams struck for five runs in their half of the inning to take a 6-2 lead.

After Angelo State added another run in the in the fourth to make it 7-2, the Aggies struck for their own three run inning in the sixth. Bower singled to lead off the inning and then moved to third on a Cody Knight double. Cole Williams walked to load the bases for Adrian Rodriquez, who singled through the right side, driving in Bower. Two batters later Victor DeJesus drove in two runs on a soft single to right center making it 7-5.

The Rams added an insurance run in their half of the sixth and Joe Hauser closed out the game, giving ASU the 8-5 win.

Javarias Banks got the loss for Cameron, as he only gave up one earned run, but seven crossed the plate while he was on the mound. He also walked five batters and struck out five while giving up seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. Tyler Abrego finished off the game, giving up just one run on five hits and striking out three.  

Bower and DeJesus each had three hits and two RBI for the Aggies, while Knight and Ramirez each had a pair of hits.  

Angelo State had three players with two hits and an RBI each.  Ryan Smith got the win and struck out eight CU hitters in 5.1 innings of work. Hauser pitched the final 3.2 innings, recording his 13 save of the season.

Cameron is now 29-19 overall this season, while the Rams improve to 40-11 overall.

The Aggies will face Texas A&M-Kingsville in an elimination game, Friday at 3:30 p.m. Last weekend, CU swept the Javelinas in a four game home stand.
