STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Cameron University baseball team went 1-1 at Tarleton State on Saturday, falling in game one 8-3 and winning game two 10-9 behind two homeruns from
Luke Hughes, number one and two of his CU career.
Cameron fell behind early in game one, as the Texans struck for four runs in the first inning, three on a Jared McCarver homer over the left centerfield wall.
The Aggies were able to get two runs back in their half of the second inning, as
David Madigan drove in
Briton Schiewe on a single to right and then
Kameron Good scored on a bases loaded walk drawn by
Michael Flohr.
However, TSU put another four spot on the board in bottom of the second, capped by a Tyler Fowler two RBI double that put the home team on top 8-2.
Andrew Garza was able to settle in from there, giving up just two hits in the final four innings, but the damage had already been done.
A
Cole Williams RBI double in the fifth would get CU as close as they would get in game one of the doubleheader, as Nathan Hickey and Conner Fletcher combined for 11 strikeouts in the 8-3 win.
Garza gave up nine hits in six innings of work, while five of the eight runs that crossed the plate against him were earned; he struck out four and walked four.
Game two of the day was a back and forth contest that started early as the Aggies struck for two runs in the top of the first, one when Williams reached on an error and the other on a Good RBI triple.
After TSU cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first, the Aggies added three runs on Hughes' first homer of the day to put the Black and Gold up 5-1.
Tarleton State then scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings to tie the game at five. But the CU offense answered quick, putting up a two spot of their own in the top of the fifth via a
Mitch Sloan two RBI single.
Williams led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to right center, but TSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, two on a homer of their own, to even the score at eight all.
Hughes came up big again, hitting his second homer, a two run shot to right in the top of the seventh, giving the Black and Gold a two run cushion. They would need both of those runs, as the home team added another run in the bottom of the seventh, but
Sean Maher was able to get out of trouble and secure the win for CU.
Maher received the win, going the final two innings, giving up four runs on four hits, and striking out two.
Reid Garrett pitched the first five innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits and five walks.
Hughes was 4-8 on the day with five RBI and three runs scored, while Flohr went 3-6.
Cameron is now 8-9 on the young season, while the Texans move to 11-9 overall.
