LAWTON, Okla. –
Cole Williams drove in six runs as the Cameron baseball team took down Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, 14-5.
The Aggies trailed early, as freshman pitcher
Alex Ward gave up four runs on four hits in the first inning. However, Ward settled in and held the Rangers to just one run and one hit in the next six innings. The Lawton native earned his first career win, going seven innings and giving up just four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Williams was able to help out the freshman by recording his first of his six RBIs in the third inning, driving in
Trey Bigford on a double in the left center gap. The Aggie senior then came up again in the fifth with the bases loaded and walked to add another run to the scoreboard. Williams wasn't the only Aggie driving in runs, as
Micah Kaaukai added another run on a sacrifice fly and then Williams scored on an error by the NWOSU third baseman to tie the game at four runs apiece.
After the Rangers scored their fifth run in the top of the sixth inning, the Aggies put up another three spot in their half of the sixth. Kaaukai was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then
Luke Hughes scored on a safety squeeze from
Kameron Good. The third run was scored when Bigford came in on an infield hit by
Colton Adams, making it 7-5 in favor of the Black and Gold.
Cameron wasn't done in the sixth, as Bigford got in on the action with an RBI single in the seventh, which was followed by single over the short stop's head by Williams to drive in another pair of runs. Bigford then scored on a double-play ball to cap another big inning.
In the eighth, Bigford and Williams kept up their strong day at the plate, as the CU second baseman brought in a run on what would have been a sacrifice fly, but the ball was dropped by the right fielder, and Williams added to his RBI total with a two run double to give the Ags their 14-5 lead.
Gaige Vines pitched a dominant, one hit two innings to secure the victory.
The Aggies were led by Williams' three hits, six RBI day, while Bigford was 2-3 with four runs scored and two RBI, and Hughes reached base five times with three runs scored.
Cameron, who is now 9-10 overall this season, will face a tough task in their next four contests as they host No. 19 Texas A&M-Kingsville for the first Lone Star Conference series of the season.
