LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie baseball team could not complete the comeback on No. 16 Texas A&M-Kingsville in the opening game of a four game series as they fell 13-9 on Friday.
The game started out looking like it was going to be an easy win for the Javelinas as they struck for 10 runs in the first three innings. Cameron did put a couple runs on the board in the first couple innings as well, with
Mitch Sloan doubling in a run in the second inning and
Micah Kaaukai driving in a run on a triple in third.
After Kingsville added another run in the sixth, the Aggies clawed back into the game, scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the score to 11-8.
Luke Hughes started the scoring off by driving in a run on a single to right. In the next at-bat,
Trey Bigford drove in another run on a fielder's choice, which was followed by a RBI single from
Cole Williams. Kaaukai capped off the inning with a single down the left field line that unloaded the bases to bring CU to within three runs.
Cameron was able to add another run in the next inning as Hughes drove in
Michael Flohr, who singled earlier in the inning, to give the Aggies their ninth run of the game. Unfortunately, the Javelinas added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth via a Christian Caudle two run homer.
That would be all Tyler Flores would need as hit struck out three in the final three innings of work.
Kaukai, Hughes, Williams, and Bigford all led CU with two hits, while Kaaukai had four RBI and Hughes had a pair of runs driven in.
Andrew Garza got the loss after going the first 5.2 innings and giving up nine earned runs on 11 hits.
Cameron is now sitting at 9-11 on the season, as the No. 16 Javelinas move to 17-3.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday as they play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
