LAWTON- The Cameron baseball team split their double header with No. 24 Angelo State during Lone Star Conference opening weekend on Saturday afternoon at McCord Field.
The Aggies took game one 5-2 for their second victory against a ranked opponent this season. However, the Aggies would fall 3-0 in the nightcap.
The Aggies started the day strong, jumping to 1-0 lead in the second inning as Adams singled to score Kaaukai who got into scoring position on a steal. However, ASU got the lead in the third, plating two on a single in a frame where they recorded four hits.
After strong backing from starter
Gaige Vines, the Aggies turned their offense back on in the fifth, grabbing a two run advantage.
Luke Hughes tripled to right scoring
Nik Sanchez for the tie then stole home on a double steal with
Trey Bigford. CU would have five stolen bases in the game.
Bigford crossed the plate for the third run of the inning via a single from
Cole Williams. In the sixth, Sanchez RBI singled over shortstop for a 5-2 CU lead.
Vines held the Rams hitless in the sixth before closer
Skyler Henderson took over in the seventh earning the save by setting the Rams down in order; two on strikeouts.
Vines earned his first win on the mound this season, allowing six hits and no walks in six innings of work.
CU's offense out-hit the Rams 9 to 6 with Hughes and
Briton Schiewe having multiple hit games. The CU defense caught a runner stealing, picked one off and turned a double play.
In game two, CU's offense struggled, producing just one hit in the fifth inning. In that same frame, they had the bases loaded with two outs but a strikeout retired the side as the Aggies were unable to chip away at a two run deficit.
ASU recorded six hits against CU's starter
Reid Garrett (3-2) and tacked on another insurance run in the seventh making it a 3-0 game in the eventual loss. The Rams also had six stolen bases.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh,
Sean Maher appeared on the mound for CU, facing their final batter with a runner on third but got out of the situation with a strikeout swinging.
Cameron could not manufacture any runs in the seventh as three went down on fly balls leaving one man stranded from a walk.
The Aggies are now 11-15 and 1-2 in the LSC, while ASU is 21-8 and 2-1 in the league.
