Williams drives in four, CU drops opening games of WT series

CANYON, Texas –The Cameron baseball team opened up their four game series against No. 7 West Texas A&M with a pair of losses in a doubleheader on Sunday, falling 10-5 and 12-2.

WT opened up game one with a bang, scoring four runs on a pair of homers in the second inning. However, the Aggies answered right back in the top of the third as Trey Bigford drove in Luke Hughes on a RBI groundout and then Cole Williams drove in a pair on his team leading sixth homer of the year.

The Buffs then scored six straight runs, adding one on a solo homer in the third and then five more in the fourth to take a 10-3 lead.

Cameron added two more runs in the next two innings, as Hughes scored on a wild pitch in the fifth and Briton Schiewe homered in the fifth, but the damage had already been done as WT held CU scoreless in the seventh to earn the 10-5 victory.

Reid Garrett pitched all six innings for the Aggies, giving up nine earned runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts for his third loss of the season.

The Black and Gold were the first on the board in game two, scoring two runs on a Williams single in the top of the first. Unfortunately, it was all WT from then on as the home team scored a run in the second, two in the third, three in the fifth, and six in the seventh to win by run-rule 12-2.

Gaige Vines started for the Ags, but came out after 2.1 innings of work, as Abraham Renteria pitched the final 4.1, giving up 11 runs on 14 hits with two Ks.

Hughes led Cameron with three hits and three runs scored on in the doubleheader, while Williams had two hits and four RBI and Kaaukai had two hits as well.

The Aggies, who are now 15-22 overall and 5-9 in Lone Star Conference contests, and the Buffs, who improve to 28-7 overall and remain undefeated at 10-0 in league contests, will close out the series in Canyon on Monday, April 16, with another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
